"Inspiring . . . Crammed with facts and anecdotes about Temple Grandin's favorite subject: the senses, brains, emotions, and amazing talents of animals."--"The New York Times Book Review" People with autism can often think the way animals think, which puts them in the perfect position to translate animal talk. In this groundbreaking book Temple Grandin draws on her own experiences with autism as well as her distinguished career as an animal scientist to deliver an extraordinary message about how animals think, act, and feel. Funny, inspiring, and full of incredible insight, "Animals in Translation" will forever change the way we look at our fellow creatures. "Animals in Translation" is wonderful! The most important book I ve read in 30 years. --Patricia McConnell, author of "The Other End of the Leash" Grandin s focus in "Animals in Translation" is not on all the normal things autistics and animals can t do but on the unexpected, extraordinary, invaluable things they can. --"O, the Oprah Magazine""

I don't know if people will ever be able to talk to animals the way Doctor Doolittle could, or whether animals will be able to talk back. Maybe science will have something to say about that. But I do know people can learn to "talk" to animals, and to hear what animals have to say, better than they do now. --From Animals in Translation

Why would a cow lick a tractor? Why are collies getting dumber? Why do dolphins sometimes kill for fun? How can a parrot learn to spell? How did wolves teach man to evolve? Temple Grandin draws upon a long, distinguished career as an animal scientist and her own experiences with autism to deliver an extraordinary message about how animals act, think, and feel. She has a perspective like that of no other expert in the field, which allows her to offer unparalleled observations and groundbreaking ideas.

People with autism can often think the way animals think, putting them in the perfect position to translate "animal talk." Grandin is a faithful guide into their world, exploring animal pain, fear, aggression, love, friendship, communication, learning, and, yes, even animal genius. The sweep of Animals in Translation is immense and will forever change the way we think about animals.

*includes a Behavior and Training Troubleshooting Guide

Among its provocative ideas, the book:
argues that language is not a requirement for consciousness--and that animals do have consciousness applies the autism theory of "hyper-specificity" to animals, showing that animals and autistic people are so sensitive to detail that they "can't see the forest for the trees"--a talent as well as a "deficit" explores the "interpreter" in the normal human brain that filters out detail, leaving people blind to much of the reality that surrounds them--a reality animals and autistic people see, sometimes all too clearlyexplains how animals have "superhuman" skills: animals have animal geniuscompares animals to autistic savants, declaring that animals may in fact be autistic savants, with special forms of genius that normal people do not possess and sometimes cannot even see examines how humans and animals use their emotions to think, to decide, and even to predict the future reveals the remarkable abilities of handicapped people and animals maintains that the single worst thing you can do to an animal is to make it feel afraid

A must read for anyone who works with animals This book is perfect for anyone who works with animals, and especially anyone STUDYING to work with animals. It is written in a style more akin to a textbook or training manual - which I was not expecting. It is extremely insightful, and the language is easy to understand - with lots of examples to help explain. It covers a broad spectrum of animals from lab, and farm animals to wild animals and domestic animals such as dogs and cats. If you have any regular interaction with an animal, you are likely to get something from this book. Grandin doesn't just explain her views on a situation either, she explains the differing views of others as well. She also compares animal behaviors and ways of thinking, to that of autistic people - the similarities are amazing in my opinion. It's no wonder to me that she has been able to discover these insights into animals that other "normal" people have not been able to. Her insight is simultaneously both more simplified, yet more complex - she figures out that it's usually a simple fix to the problem, not something major, yet, no one else is able to see that - it's simple for her but not them. Her techniques of finding the problem (such as trying to see the animal's world from ITS point of view) make you wonder why no one else figured out that you should do that. It makes so much sense, especially when you consider the old saying of how you can't understand someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes - it's the same for animals: you need to understand where they're coming from. At the end of the book there is also a guide to the different behaviors she covered, as well as troubleshooting for dealing with that specific behavior or problem cause. Overall I found this to be a very educational and insightful book and would recommend it to anyone interested in animals and the way they think and behave, as well as why.Lots of false/misleading information... Absolutely shocked at the amount of inaccurate information, particularly about dogs. I don’t believe Grandin has enough (if any) experience with breeding, raising, and training dogs to make some of these claims. I would love to know where she gets some of these statistics and information. The one that bothered me the most was when it was stated that the majority of dogs are neutered/spayed at 2 years of age or older - that is just flat out false. The majority of neuter/spays on dogs are done at a ridiculously young age - the vast majority of vets push to neuter/spay as soon as possible. Not a reliable source for accurate information on dogs and their behaviors. Can we all get along? This is an absolute delight to read. I love animals-even humans. Grandin gives some new and interesting ways to look at the connection between autistic perception and thinking and that of animals. She thinks the frontal lobes and words limit our ability to understand autism and animals. The frontal lobes abstract and pattern recognize but lose sensory detail. She may be right.Animals and autistic people can help us see more of the worlds detail that the frontal lobes filter out in much the same way as dogs and their superior sense of smell. We need to learn to interact and cooperate with the rest of nature-even the "pathogens".. Frank
